Mont Blanc, located near Chamonix, France is the tallest mountain in the European Union with an elevation of 15,700feet. It is located on the western part of the Alps. In comparison, Mt. Whitney is the tallest mountain in the contiguous US and is only 14,505 feet tall.
Mont Blanc translated directly to English would be… Mountain White. Which of course means, White Mountain.
This gives us a clue about how French is slightly different than English; The adjectives go after the noun. Also, if I wanted to pronounce Mont Blanc properly, I would say something like: Mo(n) Bla(n). The “(n)” is nothing more than a nasal sound that doesn’t really exist in English. This tends to happen quite often in French. The endings are dramatically silenced into just a nasal sound.
Below is picture of a town in France called Chamonix nestled in the foothills of Mont Blanc.
I was in Chamonix when I was 16 years old. I want to thank my parents for taking me there.
I remember we stayed in Chamonix for a couple days and took the téléphérique up to Mont Blanc. Even though it was in the middle of summer, it was completely white up there with snow and pretty cold. When we came back to our hotel room later that day, it started to rain. And I realized it’s snowing up on that mountain that I was on earlier.
I don’t even know when the next time would be that I could be back there, but that’s beautiful. I will never forget that. Thanks mom and dad.
