Mucolytic

Acetylcysteine was mentioned before as it’s an antidote to acetaminophen. This antidote also has the use of breaking up the mucous in the respiratory tract when given by a nebulizer. If you’re involved with patients who are going to have a radiological procedure, it’s also utilized to prevent nephrotoxicity (we aren’t sure how it works to do that exactly).

  • Acetylcysteine (Mucomyst)
  • Administered via respiratory therapy
  • Breaks up mucous in respiratory tract
  • Also utilized as an antidote to acetaminophen toxicity
