Metronidazole (Flagyl)

  • Metronidazole (Flagyl) – p.o., inj
  • Bacteriostatic (p.o.) / Bacteriocidal (if given intravenously)
  • Use
    • Trichomonas (sexually transmitted infection)
    • Anaerobic Infections
    • Helicobacter pylori (same as clindamycin minus the STD)
  • Adverse Reaction
    • A disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol.
      • Disulfiram (Antabuse) is a drug that scares alcoholics not to drink because they may literally die. If they have alcohol while on metronidazole, they may not die but they will get extremely sick.
