I almost never wear sunglasses. Not because I have anything against them, but because I can’t fathom spending more than twenty bucks on a pair and end up losing them in a week anyway. But almost everybody wears sunglasses. And I don’t know if everyone realizes it but just throwing this out there as a stupid reminder: I CAN’T TELL IF YOU’RE LOOKING AT ME. So if we’re in a public space and you see me, and you want to say hello just to be courteous, THEN BE UP FRONT AND SAY SOMETHING. I can’t tell if you’re staring off somewhere random, lost deep in your own world with headphones blasting or if you’re staring RIGHT AT ME.
There have been so many awkward situations where I simply don’t know whether to say hello because I can’t tell if you’re staring right at me OR you might not even be aware of my existence so I don’t know whether I’m going to catch you off guard. And if you’re wearing headphones it’s even more weird cause then I don’t even know if you could hear me.
A friend of mine told me something funny the other day… He said when he was traveling in another country, he didn’t understand why every single person was seemingly staring at him. It took him a moment to realize that they weren’t staring: People were just practicing NORMAL EYE CONTACT because sunglasses were not commonly worn there!
